Walker-Warnock debate may cover abortion, Joe Biden, qualifications

The day has finally arrived, and it looks like the much-anticipated U.S. Senate debate between Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker is going ahead.

With Walker taking an early lead in the primary and Warnock facing no significant primary challenge, the two men have effectively been running against each other since January. They have had plenty of time to hone their attacks — debate logitsics were even a major source of conflict, with Democrats mocking Walker as "chicken" for his hesitancy to commit to a debate before Walker accepted an invitation to a debate that Warnock had not already agreed to.

Here are other topics likely to be discussed during the debate, which begins at 7 p.m. and will be televised by WSAV (NBC affiliate) and WTGS (Fox) in Savannah, WJBF (ABC) in Augusta and WAGA (Fox) in Athens.

The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson overturned Roe v. Wade and allowed states to regulate abortion without restriction. In Georgia, a law banning abortions after about six weeks, the so-called "heartbeat" bill, has since taken effect.

The ban alone would have made abortion a major issue in this year's Senate race. Warnock is supportive of abortion rights, describing himself as a "pro-choice pastor," while Walker has said he would support a nationwide ban. Walker has used Warnock's support of abortion as an attack line.

Last week, a news website, The Daily Beast, reported that Walker had paid for an abortion for a former girlfriend in 2009, and then later that the woman is the mother of one of Walker's children. Walker flatly denies the allegations, including at a press conference last week at a lumber yard, where he also reiterated he will be facing Warnock at the debate. Warnock, for his part, declined to comment on the allegations at a rally in Savannah the same day.

During the debate, Warnock may focus more on the policy side, but it might also give him an opportunity to press Walker on the story and his support for an abortion ban without exception.

Because Warnock has spent nearly two years in the Senate, the debate will likely include questions about his record — whether he is a pragmatic, effective senator for Georgia or a rubber stamp for the national agenda of an unpopular president.

Warnock has run a campaign largely focused on what he has achieved during his short time in office. A recent ad highlighted his bipartisan work with Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama to decrease barriers to trade for peanuts; others highlight his support for funding for the Port of Savannah and capping the cost of insulin. In a memo sent out Thursday, before the debate, he again highlighted his bipartisan work.

Walker, meanwhile, has worked to tie Warnock to President Joe Biden, who has had a lower approval rating for over a year.

"I'd like to talk about how Joe Biden and Raphael Warnock have hurt Georgia families," said Walker during a press conference last week. "When he took office he said he was going to keep American families first, and instead he put Joe Biden first."

Walker has said the stories about his personal life and the alleged abortion are distractions to keep voters from looking at policy issues, and recently made a video saying Warnock is running a "nasty, dishonest campaign."

One question for the senator may relate not to his time in Washington, but to his other job as senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

On Tuesday, the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news outlet, reported residents of Columbia Tower, an apartment complex 99% owned by the Ebenezer Baptist Church, faced a series of eviction lawsuits from the management company. The apartments are for those experiencing homelessness or with mental disabilities. The most recent eviction was filed in September, and the total past-due rent is $4,900.

The Free Beacon said it was not clear if Warnock knew about the evictions and that he did not respond to a request for comment. Walker jumped on the story, tweeting he would pay the past due rents.

Walker's competence will likely also be discussed during the debate.

Walker may not have a legislative record, but he has a lengthy list of public achievements — on the football field, the bobsled tracks, and in the MMA ring.

But he has also faced a string of allegations that he exaggerated business successes, was violent towards past romantic partners, and admitted during the campaign that he had three children he had not previously discussed publicly. The New York Times reported that his company had claimed to be making charitable contributions that appear never to have been fulfilled.

A PolitiFact fact check said that Walker exaggerated his work with veterans and falsely claimed to have graduated college and worked in law enforcement; he also misrepresented the tax impact of the Inflation Reduction Act.

Walker has also downplayed racism as an issue, including saying at one point "you're not a racist unless you’re 185-years old," which some voters — especially Black voters — felt ignored ongoing issues of racial injustice.

In the pre-debate memo, the Warnock campaign wrote "in Friday’s debate, Walker will lie to the people of Georgia once again, falsely claiming he’s been 'transparent' about his history of violence."

The toss-up Senate seat has drawn massive amounts of money to the race.

From the start of July to the end of September, Warnock's campaign brought in $26.3 million and $90 million since winning his runoff almost two years ago. In the most recent quarter, Walker raised $12 million — he has totaled $33 million since the start of the campaign. Warnock has $13.7 million on hand, Walker had $7 million.

Even as Walker's campaign contended with the abortion story, the Trump-backed super PAC MAGA Inc. bought $750,000 in ads in Georgia to back Walker. Since his first run for Senate, Warnock has raised $12 million from inside Georgia, and over 10 times as much from out-of-state donors across the country, according to campaign finance transparency website Open Secrets.
